Agriculture CS Linturi’s Fate to Be Known This Afternoon
The Select Committee looking into the potential dismissal of Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi will announce its findings during a special sitting of the House this afternoon. When the 11-member select committee, which withdrew last Friday to compile its report, announces its judgment, the beleaguered CS will know his destiny.
This comes after Bumula MP Jack Wamboka’s special resolution to impeach the CS for selling counterfeit fertilizer was approved by the National Assembly.
Speaker Moses Wetang’ula said on May 6 that the committee report will be discussed at a meeting to be held on Monday, May 13 at 2:30 PM.
Wetang’ula stated, “The Select Committee shall report back to the House, within ten days, on whether the allegations against the Cabinet Secretary are substantiated, pursuant to the provisions of Article 152(7) of the Constitution and Standing Order 66(5)(b).”
A resolution mandating the President to fire a Cabinet Secretary must have the backing of the majority of the National Assembly’s 175 members, in accordance with Article 152(10) of the Constitution.
The first CS to be targeted for impeachment is Linturi; should he be removed, he may file a legal appeal. The Senate’s modifications to the Division of Revenue Bill and the Departmental Committee on Finance and National Planning’s report on the adoption of the Multilateral Convention to Implement Tax Treaty-Related Measures will also be taken into consideration by the MPs.
The Third Reading of the National Disaster Risk Management Bill and Senate Amendments to the Division of Revenue Bill are two more concerns. The National Assembly is scheduled to return to regular sessions on Tuesday, June 4, after a lengthy recess that ended on May 2, 2024.
