Blow To Students Taking Diploma, Certificate Course In Universities As Gov’t Makes these Changes
Students who prefer to register in university-based Technical and Vocational Education and Training (Tvet) programs are not eligible for government assistance.
The CEO of Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS), Agnes Wahome, states that university-based diploma and certificate programs fall under this category.
She was speaking on Tuesday morning in an interview with Citizen TV.
According to Wahome, the courses would be available on the Kuccps website during the selection process.
The Ministry of Education oversees about 200 Tvet institutes. According to her, these students will be eligible for government loans and grants.
She went on to say that this technique has been around for a while.
This week, the president proposed a need-based funding plan for college students.
Ruto outlined three categories of students: less vulnerable, more vulnerable, and able.
Children from low-income families will benefit from equitable access to TVET and higher education for the first time. According to Ruto, their homes are not obligated to make any kind of educational contribution to their children.
The President stated that the new funding mechanism will take effect at the beginning of the upcoming fiscal year.
The idea will help the new batch of 145,325 students enrolling in TVET institutions and 173,127 students enrolling in universities.
Meanwhile, the President promised to raise higher education financing to Sh84.6 billion in the fiscal year 2023–2024—a 56% increase over the current allocation.
According to him, the new investment is made up of a Sh31.6 billion HELB loan component and a Sh53 billion budgetary commitment.
