Iranian President Missing After an Helicopter Carrying Him Crushed
State media reports that a helicopter transporting Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has been involved in an accident. The helicopter, which also had Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian on board, made a hard landing on Sunday.
Rescue efforts are underway, but Interior Minister reports indicate that harsh weather is complicating access to the crash site. The condition of the passengers remains uncertain as no contact has been established.
Local sources state that President Raisi was en route to Tabriz in northwestern Iran after inaugurating the Qiz Qalasi and Khodaafarin dams near the Azerbaijan border.
Thick fog is hampering the search, with visibility in the mountainous, forested area reduced to about five meters, according to a Fars news agency reporter.
The crash site is located approximately 50 kilometers north of Tabriz. Ahmad Alirezabeigi, the MP for Tabriz, has confirmed that rescue teams have yet to locate the helicopter.
He mentioned that the other two helicopters in the convoy landed without issues.
State television has broadcast footage of worshippers in Mashhad praying for President Raisi’s wellbeing, as concerns for the missing officials grow.
Rescue efforts have been initiated
Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi informed state television that several rescue teams were attempting to reach the crash site, but their progress was hindered by fog and adverse weather conditions.
Vahidi confirmed that there had been radio contact with the helicopter but provided no further information, indicating that communication lines might have been severed.
Major-General Mohammad Bagheri, the Iranian military chief, stated on Sunday that all resources, equipment, and capabilities of the army, army corps, and police command should be utilized to aid in the relief efforts and search for the president’s helicopter and his companions.
According to the government news site IRNA, the president’s helicopter is presumed to have crashed in the Dizmar Protected Area, a forested and mountainous region.
Reporting from Daily Brief Resul Serdar noted, “Currently, it is foggy and rainy, and authorities predict that this adverse weather will persist until Monday night.”
