Reuters, Manchester, England coach Emma Hayes’ final game in command, Chelsea secured a record fifth consecutive Women’s Super League title at Old Trafford on Saturday thanks to a brilliant performance by striker Mayra Ramirez.
The final whistle caused the away fans to erupt in joy as Hayes received the farewell she deserved. Chelsea ended the season with 55 points, level with Manchester City but seven ahead of them on goal difference.
The hosts struggled a week after their FA Cup final victory over Tottenham Hotspur. Ramirez opened the scoring for Chelsea after 89 seconds, thumping home a wonderful cross from Guro Reiten. She then set up Johanna Rytting Kaneryd for a second goal six minutes later.
Ramirez, a Colombian international, kept up her impressive play, setting up Sjoeke Nusken for the third goal in the 44th minute and scoring her second goal in stoppage time in the first half.
Melanie Leupolz added a fifth goal two minutes after the half, virtually ending any hope of Chelsea catching Manchester City and turning the rest of the match into a victory parade
In their most crushing league loss ever, United’s players were unable to contain their surging opponents, failing to record a shot on goal against the side they defeated in the FA Cup semifinals.
Fran Kirby, a replacement who entered the game in the 72nd minute and scored the sixth, sealed a seventh league victory for Hayes, who is heading out to coach the U.S. women’s national team after 14 years as head coach. Kirby was playing her farewell game for the club.
