Chelsea To Play Europa Conference League After City Lose FA Cup Final
Manchester United’s shock victory against Manchester City in today’s FA Cup final, 2-1, means that only Europa Conference League football will be played by Chelsea next season, instead of the Europa League.
So, UEFA’s third-tier competition is what awaits us instead of the second.City essentially did not turn up for the game — just as the team had not turned up for our semifinal, but we let them off the hook — an own goal was gifted to their bitter rivals, followed by the concession of a well-taken second goal before halftime.
A bit of a gaffe from André Onana, allowing a Doku shot to squirm through his hands, made things slightly interesting in the final minutes, but City never really looked like winning, or caring. Thanks for nothing, I guess.
On the plus side, the Europa Conference is a new competition for us — it has only existed for a few years, after all — and it can now be added to the trophy cabinet.
Additionally, some new and interesting locales, possibly even my hometown, will be visited! From a personal standpoint, that would be pretty cool!
Also, presumably, the Conference will allow for easy rotation and help distribute the workload among the squad.
This is assuming the competition is not just pulled out of because UEFA’s financial fair play scrutiny is not wanted.
The prize money on offer is not all that amazing but still in the tens of millions (West Ham got around £15m for winning it last season).
Anyway, Europa Conference here we gooooooo!
Chelsea will enter as a seeded team in the “Play-off” stage, the last qualifying stage before the “League” proper begins. The draw for the play-offs will be held on August 5, with games set for August 22 and 29.
