CS Nakhumicha Emerges Most Blamed For Doctors’ Strike – Poll Reveals
The most recent results of a Tifa Research poll suggest that Health CS Susan Nakhumicha has a large portion of the blame for the continuing strikes in the health sector.
Even though she claims that the Treasury’s inability to provide funds is the main problem, 47% of respondents blame her.
According to the poll, “the CS for Health is held more accountable than any other official or entity for the industrial action by medical workers.” Even though she and others have identified the “lack of sufficient funds in Treasury” as the primary reason why the majority of the demands made by the medics cannot be met, this view endures.
The poll indicates that the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) bears 28% of the responsibility. Of the respondents, 8% believe that county governments, who employ the doctors, bear some responsibility.
One percent blames the Council of Governors and Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, while five percent of the respondents blame the Salaries and Remuneration Commission.
It’s interesting that the poll highlights how little attention was paid to the previous administration’s (Jubilee) leadership, which was a signatory to the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
The initial strike was attributed primarily to the failure to carry out this agreement. Only 23% of Kenyans surveyed said they supported the strike, with the majority (54%) saying they had no support at all.
The areas in the Lower East and South Rift are the most opposed to the strike.
The study’s fieldwork, which took place in nine different geographic zones between April 27 and 29, 2024, involved 2,912 respondents.
Central Rift, Coast, Lower Eastern, Mt. Kenya, Nairobi, Northern, Nyanza, South Rift, and Western are some of these zones. Face-to-face telephone interviews in Kiswahili and English were used for data collection, with a 1.82 percent margin of error.
