Defiant JSS Teachers Vow To Continue Striking
Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) teachers have vowed to stay put even as their employer directed them back to class.
Emboldened by support from Kenya Union of ost Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet), the teachers announced elaborate plans to intensify their demonstration starting next week.
According to Daniel Murithi, secretary general of the Kenya Junior Secondary Teachers Association, the recent communication from the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) urging them to resume work will not sway their resolve.
“The fact that TSC has responded requesting you to go back to school, means the report has reached them that the majority are not going back to school. The fact that they are requesting you to go back to school, it tells you that they can’t replace 46,000 teachers even if they want, “Murithi said.
His reaction comes in response to a statement by TSC Chairman Dr Jameleck Muturi, dated May 14, affirming the commission’s commitment to addressing issues affecting the teaching service.
“The commission calls upon the teacher interns engaged under the programme to obey the court order and go back to school as teaching and learning in all public schools formally resumed on May 13,” Muturi said.
However, Murithi said the teachers remain
unmoved in their quest for their rights.
“I think the response by TSC sends a clear
message that they are cornered. We will not succumb to that kind of pressure and intimidation.”
He interpreted TSC’s response as a sign of
frustration and asserting their determination to persist until their demands are met.
“TSC did not obtain any stay orders regarding the judgement delivered on April 17. Instead, TSC was directed to comply with the judgement by
the close of August 1,” he said terming the commission’s letter as misplaced.
The teachers emphasised that their protest
will escalate starting next week as they continue to advocate for their rights.

“We have plans to hold demonstrations next week across the country, ”Murithi said. Patience Nkatha, treasurer of the Kenya Junior Secondary Schools Teachers Association, said unresolved issues can’t justify their return to the
classroom.
