DP Gachagua’s Allies Vows to Oppose Finance Bill 2024
Allegations have been made by allies of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua regarding a perceived plot within the ruling Kenya Kwanza Alliance to diminish the authority of the DP, with a vow to defend him.
Elected representatives in both national and county assemblies across various parts of the Mt Kenya region stated yesterday their unwillingness to tolerate treatment of the DP akin to that endured by President William Ruto during his tenure as Uhuru Kenyatta’s deputy.
Accompanying Mr. Gachagua, who recently reappeared after a period of absence from public view, to a church fundraiser in Nyeri County, these politicians transformed the event into a platform for safeguarding the DP against political adversaries.
This development occurs amidst allegations of strained relations between President Ruto and Mr. Gachagua, stemming from the latter’s absence from several functions over the past ten days, events presided over by his superior.
Led by Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, these politicians sent a stern message to Mr. Gachagua’s detractors, asserting “enough is enough” and promising a fierce counteroffensive if such undermining persists.
“We, in the Mt Kenya region, rose early to elect this government. We elected both William Ruto and Rigathi Gachagua and endured much in the process. The injustices against Ruto during his deputy presidency are well-known, and we will not permit a repetition with our son,” Mr. Kahiga stated.
Some speakers hinted that the plot to undermine the DP originated “in the Rift Valley” without providing further details.
Mr. Gakuya, a contender for the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party Nairobi City County chairmanship, alleged that politicians from the Rift Valley region were antagonizing Mt Kenya.
“We implore President Ruto to intervene and halt these individuals,” he asserted.
Legislators present included Mwangi Gakuya (Embakasi North), Major Ndong (Kajiado), Jane Kihara (Naivasha), Gitonga Mukunji (Manyata), Geofrey Kiringa (Mbere North), George Gachagua (Ndaragwa), Kamande Mwangi (Roysambu), Dr. John Mutunga (Tigania West), Kirima Ngucine (Imenti Central), and Rindikiri Mugambi (Buuri). Only three out of six Nyeri MPs attended the function.
Nandi Senator Samson Cheragei encouraged Mr. Gachagua to persevere, dismissing critics as wasting their time.
“The deputy president is not just a Mt Kenya leader; he is a national leader and should not concern himself with such trivial matters,” Mr. Cheragei remarked.
When Mr. Gachagua addressed the gathering, he refrained from delving into the controversy.
“There are many discussions ongoing, and I will refrain from commenting. Let us endeavor to lower the political temperature and focus on serving our people because there will be time for politics,” he stated.
Calling for an end to premature campaigning, Mr. Gachagua urged leaders to “respect those in office and allow them to deliver”.
“The public will assess their performance,” he noted, referring to elected officials, “and decide whether to renew their contracts or terminate them.”
However, Mr. Gachagua cryptically suggested that a group of politicians criticizing him were merely “amplifiers,” hinting at potential manipulation by influential forces.
“To the people of Mt Kenya, let us not allow ourselves to be divided. Let us pray for unity and refrain from betraying each other. Some individuals out there are speaking on behalf of others; if you listen closely, you’ll realize they are amplifiers,” he cautioned in his native Kikuyu.
The DP’s absence from public view for several days, skipping numerous significant events, fueled speculation regarding his whereabouts and his political rapport with President Ruto.
Former Laikipia East MP Cate Waruguru accused The Service Party leader Mwangi Kiunjuri and other figures of being utilized by the “enemies” of the Mt Kenya region to undermine the DP.
The DP’s allies further accused Narc-Kenya party leader Martha Karua and Jubilee Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni of scheming to sow discord in the Mt Kenya region.
They dismissed last Friday’s meeting of a segment of the Mt Kenya leadership, dubbed the Limuru III conference, as inconsequential to the region’s political dynamics, asserting it failed to yield any “tangible” outcomes.
