Government Extends 2nd Term to Reclaim Learning Opportunities
To make up for lost time resulting from a two-week delay in the reopening of educational institutions due to flooding, the government has decided to extend the dates for Term Two of the school calendar, according to Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu.
At a conference on Thursday, Machogu disclosed that the second term would be extended for an indefinite period to allow schools to adequately cover the curriculum, especially for candidates getting ready for the national exams that are set for November of this year.
Machogu specifically emphasized the need for Form Four candidates to make up lost time, and he suggested that the second term be extended by a few days to reduce the amount of time that schools are closed.
He restated that the timetables for the tests for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) would not alter, with exams taking place in November as scheduled, even if other parts of the academic schedule were modified.
However, Machogu admitted that the heavy rains might prevent schools in seven counties—including Tana River, Homa Bay, and Kisumu—from reopening on Monday. In these situations, the ministry would look at other teaching strategies, such as moving kids to safer areas.
President William Ruto demonstrated the government’s will to address the issue on Monday by announcing a Sh1 billion fund for the restoration of schools damaged by flooding.
Schools were supposed to reopen on April 29, 2024, however, severe rains caused delays, therefore the date was pushed back to May 6, 2024.
In response to the flooding catastrophe, President Ruto then ordered the Ministry of Education to delay the reopening of all schools across the country, giving students and staff members’ safety top priority until appropriate measures are put in place to guarantee their wellbeing.
