Advertisements X Prof. Kithure Kindiki, Interior Cabinet Secretary, made the declaration on Friday in a June 14, 2024 gazette notice.
The notice said, “It is notified for the general information of the public that Monday, June 17, 2024, shall be a public holiday to mark Eid-Al-Adha. The Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 2 (1) of the Public Holidays Act, makes this declaration.”
The annual journey to Mecca, the holiest city for Muslims, culminates with the celebration of Eid-ul-Adha.
All adult Muslims who are financially or physically capable of making the travel must perform the Mecca pilgrimage at least once in their lifetime as part of their religious obligation.
Retracing the steps of the Prophet Mohammed and recounting the tale of Muslims’ devotion to God are the central themes of Eid-al-Adha.
The occasion honours Prophet Abraham’s readiness to offer his son as a sacrifice as instructed by God.
