IGAD Calls For Ceasefire, Talks Amid Escalating Sudan Conflict
Fighting between soldiers from the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Force is still going on, and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has called for an immediate end to hostilities in the region of Northern Darfur in Sudan.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, the Executive Secretary of IGAD, stated that recent attacks on the town of El Fasher’s key healthcare infrastructure had hampered the transportation of necessary medical supplies and complicated the care of injured and displaced women and children.
First Channel El Fasher, the sole town in Northern Darfur purportedly still under the authority of the Sudanese Armed Forces, is home to an estimated 800,000 inhabitants.
Dr. Workneh stressed “the urgent need for unimpeded access for humanitarian aid delivery to alleviate the suffering of affected populations” and asked “all parties involved to exercise restraint in accordance with established international norms.”
He urged the IGAD Assembly of Heads of State and Government to force the combatants to put down their weapons and start talks in order to mediate a peaceful end to the violence, which has been dragging on for more than a year.
Prior to now, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi of Kenya expressed alarm over the crisis in Sudan, calling it “an existential threat to regional peace” and urging IGAD and the African Union to lead international procedures aimed at resolving the issue.
