Nahashon Kiplagat’s interest in entrepreneurship began when he was a high school student at Bartolimo Boys High School.
After graduating from high school in 2011, Kiplagat turned to selling charcoal as a means of subsistence.
He started the business in his Kabarnet house in Baringo county with Ksh. 10,000 that he had saved from his pocket money.
After six months of charcoal sales, Kiplagat invested in two motorcycles, bringing in Ksh. 600 every day.
He enrolled at Mount Kenya University in 2012 to go toward a bachelor’s in education. In his third year of education, he came onto a commercial location close to the institution that was leased out for Ksh. 400,000. But all he had was Ksh. 200,000, which was only half of what was required.
Due to insufficient funds, the businessman turned to friends and family for more support. But his attempts were in vain. Therefore turned to using his school expenses since he thought he could make a good living there.
“I was urged to quit dreaming and concentrate on my schoolwork by my older brother. I was aware that they would never get my enthusiasm for business. Later I sensed that the house will bring me wonderful fortunes,” he explained.
Kiplagat saw that most kids were idle after class and decided to open a pool business after acquiring the space. He desired to occupy them.
His largest obstacle was raising the first funds needed to buy pool tables. He was compelled to take out a Ksh. 50,000 bank loan and sell his boda bodas for Ksh. 155,000.
He paid Ksh. 150,000 for a brand-new pool table and Ksh. 50,000 for a used one.
His meager Ksh. 20,000 in revenue for his first month did not cover his rent or his employee’s compensation. Kiplagat persevered, and the company began to grow.
In the second month, he made an average of Ksh. 2,000 a day from each pool table, which added up to Ksh. 120,000 per month.
Attracting students from nearby colleges and the University of Nairobi (UoN), he launched a second branch at Komora Centre.
The business owner employs some of his old school friends and earns over Ksh. 200,000 a month.
“My company brings in at least Ksh. 240,000 a month. I have four employees, some of whom are former students at Mount Kenya University,” he disclosed.
