KEWOTA Advocates for Breastfeeding Rooms for Teachers in Schools
The Kenya Women Teachers Association (KEWOTA) coordinator in Kericho County, Nancy Rotich, has stressed the significance of schools having spaces set aside specifically for female teachers to milk their infants.
The goal of this program is to provide female educators with the means to carry out their mother duties with honor. Rotich noted that KEWOTA is pushing for this concept across the country, imagining spaces where moms can nurse their babies for a short while and then, if they are happy, take them home with help from caregivers.
Speaking to guests at the KEWOTA branch inauguration in Kericho, Rotich explained that school officials are in charge of assigning these rooms, and the organization will subsequently furnish them with the equipment required for nursing care.
The speaker underscored that the purpose of the breastfeeding centers is to mitigate the difficulties encountered by female educators during lactation. The centers will be furnished and decorated with taste to guarantee the comfort of both the mother and the child.
At the occasion, KEWOTA representatives not only encouraged maternal support but also offered financial literacy training with the goal of shielding teachers from financial hazards. To help teachers supplement their income through small group donations within schools, they launched a table banking program to lessen the strain of high-interest loans from banks and Saccos.
Moreover, KEWOTA promoted the worldwide recognition of credentials earned after finishing these innovation programs, encouraging educators to enroll in digitization courses necessary for managing Curriculum-Based Content (CBC) textbooks.
KEWOTA made it clear that, despite emphasizing empowerment, it does not seek to outcompete other trade unions such as KUPPET and KNUT, but rather to support their initiatives. The County Director of Education (CDE)’s education officer, Moses Okea, emphasized the value of educators working together to tackle a variety of issues.
