Matatu Sacco Operators Injured in Fight Over Lucrative Route
The transportation sector in Kerugoya, Kirinyaga County, was thrown into disarray as clashes erupted between matatu and small PSV operators, resulting in injuries and disruptions along the Kerugoya, Kutus, Mwea route. The conflict, centered around the lucrative nature of the route, escalated on Wednesday, with two individuals hospitalized due to injuries sustained during the altercation.
The genesis of the confrontation stemmed from small PSV operators seizing control of the main stage, backed by a court order permitting their operation on the route. In response, matatu operators affiliated with the Kukena Sacco barricaded the route, citing non-compliance with transport regulations by the small PSVs and alleging unfair competition.
The standoff intensified, leading to violent clashes that left two matatu operators injured and requiring medical attention. Joel Magondu, representing the small PSV operators, emphasized their legal right to operate on the route, urging the aggrieved matatu operators to seek redress through the courts.
In contrast, Muriithi Gichira, Vice Chairman of the Kukena matatu operators, justified the strike, citing concerns over unlicensed vehicles impacting their business adversely.
Among the injured were Jason Maragwa, Secretary of the Kukena Sacco, and Geoffrey Nyaga, another official, with Maragwa alleging an attack with a stone and Nyaga sustaining a suspected stab wound.
Despite the conflict, small PSV owners remained resolute, asserting their lawful authorization to operate on the route. Authorities, represented by Kerugoya’s Officer Commanding Station (OCS) Mr. Kitheto and Traffic Base Commander Mr. Makembo, intervened, pledging to mediate discussions between the warring factions to resolve the impasse.
Following deliberations, reports suggest that both parties have reached a tentative agreement, potentially diffusing the tension and restoring normalcy to the transportation operations in the area.
