Mirema Estate- Nairobi Cracks Down On Noise Pollution as Court Closes Clubs, Church
The Environmental and Land Court (ELC) has made history by ordering the closure of three clubs and a church in Nairobi’s Mirema Estate and fining offenders Ksh 5 million for noise pollution.
The Amani locals Welfare Association/Mirema won the decision when locals, led by chairman Dominic Mbigi and resident John Koogi, made strong arguments.
First Channel Leading the petition, Mbigi and Koogi accused Cocorico Wines, Paris Lounge and Grill, Tessara Entertainment, and Trinity House International Ministry of violating the inhabitants’ constitutionally protected right to a clean and tranquil environment (Article 42).
After careful consideration, the court decided that the noise from these businesses seriously jeopardized the safety of the locals, which is why they compensated the locals for the inconvenience that the pubs and church were causing.
Furthermore, the presiding judge found Nairobi City County and the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) responsible for their disregard for citizens’ rights.
The entertainment centers and bars, which played loud music late into the night and disturbed sleep patterns, were the main source of complaints from the locals.

The church has faced criticism for deploying loud sound systems during services, especially on Sundays and Friday nights, which caused excessive noise disruption to the surrounding community.
For the people living in Mirema Estate, the decision offers a ray of hope since it demonstrates a clear opposition to noise pollution and upholds their right to a quiet home.
