Misleading Yet Common Words of Advice That Are Holding You Back
Throughout my experience as an entrepreneur, I’ve learned that asking others for business counsel rarely results in more answers; instead, it often raises more questions that could potentially lead to incorrect responses.
Whether your parents, pastor, friends, or other authority figures are forcing their obsolete wisdom down your neck, generic counsel can backfire if it is taken at face value.
It’s possible that the goal is to assist you, particularly if it originates from those that wish for the best for you in the future. Still, learning to be discriminating when it comes to accepting advice is a crucial ability that everyone should have.
Here are The Misleading Yet Common Words of Advice That Are Holding You Back
- Hard work Always Pays
Working too hard keeps your mind busy and hinders you from taking advantage of life’s low hanging fruit, which is a problem. It makes sense why some individuals work tirelessly their entire lives and then, when retirement age comes around, have nothing to show for all the years of labor.
Avoid being the person who lives like a donkey and then gets left behind as he gets older. Think like a horse, an intelligent animal that is cherished for the entirety of its existence. Concentrate your efforts where they are most needed.
- Wake up earlier
Everybody has a unique way of relaxing their bodies. Some people choose to get up early, go for work, and go to bed a little earlier. Some people are inherently inclined to sleep a little later into the night, wake up a little later, and go to work later.
The issue is that, oblivious to the fact that everyone has various sleep schedules, our culture idolizes early risers and demonizes late risers. But if your brain starts working at about eleven a.m., why in the world do you feel the need to torture yourself by getting up early? If anything, getting too little sleep lowers your productivity and puts you at risk for a variety of lifestyle illnesses.
Farmers who have a duty to the land and slaves who have a duty to their masters should be the only ones with the belief that “you must wake up early.” Make the most of your natural pattern by adhering to it. If you wake up early, don’t change. Don’t torment yourself if you could function better with a few more hours of sleep.
- Look for a Genuine Job
Back in my village, people would immediately question whether you truly completed university if you didn’t have a legitimate career (such as an accountant, teacher, doctor, or pilot). They will treat you as though you have just landed from Mars if you tell them you are into modeling or that you are doing some internet business on a computer.
The problem is that in today’s environment, internet freelancers make more money than accountants, hairdressers make more money than physicians, and auto mechanics make more money than engineers. Anyone who advises you to look for a legitimate job is lying; ignore them.
Put an end to listening to the folly of society if you have discovered a passion project, a source of income, or a chance for personal development.
- You Are Not Old Enough To Perform These Tasks
A few years ago, having recently completed my secondary school education, my brother hired me as a sales representative and brought me into his company. It was my responsibility to sell stationery by going door to door. However, it would be rare for a week to go by without someone asking me, “Don’t you think you’re too young to be doing this?”
I mean, I kind of gave in to what they said. They had no idea, though, that I was using that position to get money for my on-campus education. I was not as fortunate as their children, who most likely received pre-made school supplies, clothing, and other items.
- Prioritize making money, then settling down
Some people would advise you to give up everything for the time being and concentrate on your profession and education—the things that really count. However, that is poor counsel. Your financial prosperity will only go you so far. We have witnessed individuals who, after working for large corporations for the most of their youth, discover that they have lost any sense of purpose in life.
They typically experience a chilly, lonely, and monotonous old life since they have no relatives to turn to and no longer possess any youthful energy.
Therefore, remember that you are a human and not a robot, even though you may like to reach the top of your profession and earn a lot of money while you are still young! You don’t want to have everything financially possible yet be alone and without affection.
Similarly, you don’t want your wife to refer to you as a sponsor or your own children to introduce you to their classmates as “grandpa” when you visit them. This is because you married later than expected. Everything has its own time, according to even the good book—the Bible.
