A determined group of lawmakers opposing the Finance Bill 2024 has vowed to keep up the pressure on the government to abandon the contentious tax document.
Following a second reading where the bill passed with 204 votes in favour and 115 against, legislators from the Opposition coalition stressed that the fight was far from over.
“The battle will continue both here in the House and outside. We are mobilizing Kenyans across all divides for peaceful demonstrations. We will not retreat, we will not surrender. We will ensure that Kenyans’ interests come first,” asserted Nyando MP Jared Okello.
Minority Party Whip Junet Mohamed expressed disappointment and surprise at some members from their side voting for the Bill. He announced that the opposition would outline their next steps on Friday, criticizing the partisan approach to a bill with significant implications.
“We lost the battle in a very draconian manner because people were impervious to reasoning,” he remarked. “A Bill is not for one side of Kenyans. When a bill is passed in parliament, it is for all Kenyans. We need to reason together.”

Anthony Oluoch from Mathare Constituency criticized the bill’s passage, calling it a “long con.” He urged young Kenyans to persist in their fight, echoing the rallying cry, “Aluta Continua.”
In addition to demonstrations, opposition legislators plan to push for amendments next week to remove contentious clauses from the bill. They also demand the police cease using excessive force against protesting Kenyans.
“We want the government to know that the children of parliament members from both sides are protesting. If you are a listening government, take action. There is something wrong in the country,” said Millie Odhiambo, MP for Suba North.
