Museveni Suggests Collapse of EAC Countries to Form One Government
President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda has rekindled the long-standing debate of federating the states of East Africa, stating that improved relations between countries in the region are essential.
In his remarks from State House in Nairobi, President Museveni emphasized the need for strategic security in the face of an increasingly unstable geopolitical environment.
Museveni bemoaned the loss of decades of progress in 1963 by not establishing the East African Federation, looking back at past trajectories.
Citing events like the slaughter in Rwanda and the rule of Idi Amin Dada in Uganda, Museveni said, “many of the problems that we have now would have been avoided if we had formed the East Africa Federation in 1963.”
In support of a cohesive strategy, Museveni declared, “Our agenda is to create one government of East Africa.” The President of the East African Community (EAC), who has held office the longest, emphasized the importance of the EAC achieving its goal of creating a single sovereign state, saying that this consolidation is necessary for the safety and well-being of the people living in the region.
Many have interpreted the proposal for the dissolution of the governments in East Africa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Republics of Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, and South Sudan as Museveni’s bet project.
A number of people consider Museveni’s call to dissolve the East African republics of Tanzania, Uganda, South Sudan, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Republic of Burundi to be a pet project.
“In order to achieve prosperity, we must address the question of security in addition to economic integration. Political integration is our only viable option.
Museveni stated, underlining the interwoven nature of political and economic integration, “In the case of East Africa, our main target is one authority, one government for East Africa.
” Kenya began internal talks on the East African political federation last year, indicating a resurgence of interest in the initiative supported by figures like as President Museveni.
Nonetheless, doubts remain about the viability and intentions of the federation, with some voicing concerns about President Museveni’s alleged desire to take over as head of state after retirement.
In an attempt to defuse cross-border tensions, Museveni urged populations living along the Kenya-Uganda border to put their differences aside and work toward peace.
