Over 181,000 People Relocated From Riparian Reserves In Nairobi, Given Ksh.10K Each
In the ongoing government evacuation program, more than 40,000 households, encompassing 181,000 individuals, have been voluntarily relocated from riparian reserves in Nairobi, including Mathare and Ngong rivers. The initiative, spearheaded by Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Prof. Kithure Kindiki, has seen tangible progress in ensuring the safety and well-being of affected residents.
During his visit to the affected areas, Prof. Kindiki emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting each household by providing Ksh.10,000 for alternative rental premises. Additionally, he assured them of priority consideration in the affordable housing program, demonstrating the government’s dedication to addressing the housing needs of vulnerable communities.
The presence of these households in riparian areas posed significant risks, as evidenced by last month’s flooding. Prof. Kindiki underscored the importance of reclaiming these riparian reserves to mitigate such dangers and ensure the safety of residents in the long term.
Efforts to reclaim the riparian reserves include trenching and fencing, along with the planting of riverine ecosystem trees. Furthermore, plans are underway to unclog, drain, and rehabilitate the Nairobi River, with the establishment of recreational facilities for public use. These initiatives aim to not only restore the ecological balance of the area but also enhance security for nearby communities.
The reclamation of riparian reserves is expected to have far-reaching benefits beyond environmental restoration. By eliminating illegal activities such as illicit brewing, narcotic drug peddling, and criminal hideouts, the initiative will contribute to fostering safer and more vibrant communities. This holistic approach aligns with the government’s broader agenda of promoting sustainable development and ensuring the well-being of all citizens.
