President Ruto Appoints Two Fresh Faces to State Positions
Two new nominations to the Executive were made by President William Ruto on Tuesday night after receiving permission from the Public Service Commission (PSC).
Felix Koskei, Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service claims the new hires will increase President Ruto’s and Kenya’s reach throughout the region and the continent.
The Head of State designated former Amani National Congress (ANC) party secretary general Simon Gikuru as the State House Deputy Comptroller and Amb—Lazarus Amayo as the Special Envoy of the African Union Championship for Institutional Reforms.
To “support the Ministry of Foreign & Diaspora Affairs in steering the President’s unique mandate as the African Union Champion for Institutional Reform,” Amb. Amayo was appointed, according to Koskei.
In cooperation with the State Department for Foreign Affairs and the African Union institutions, the Special Envoy “is expected to play a critical role in driving AU’s institutional reforms,” he said.
Amayo is Kenya’s outgoing ambassador to the United States, based in Washington, DC. She has held several high-level public positions in the past, including high commissioner to the United Kingdom (2014–2018), ambassador/permanent representative to the United Nations (2018–2020), and permanent representative to the Commonwealth Organization and the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
In addition, he held positions as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade’s Director for Europe and Commonwealth Division from 2010 to 2014, Kenya’s High Commissioner to Malawi and Zambia, as well as Permanent Representative to COMESA from 2006 to 2010, and Kenya’s High Commissioner to India from 1999 to 2004 with concurrent accreditation to Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Singapore.
On the other hand, Mr. Gikuru has over ten years of expertise in legal matters, management, strategic planning, policy creation, financial administration, consulting, logistics, and dispute resolution. He is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya.
Before this, he held positions as Group Managing Director of Amoo Holdings International Limited, a regional logistics company with operations in Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Managing Associate at Chege Kamau & Company Advocates.
The newly appointed State House Deputy Comptroller has three degrees: a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) from Makerere University in Uganda, a Master of Law (LL.M) from the University of Nairobi, and a postgraduate diploma in law from the Kenya School of Law.
Additionally, he completed postgraduate studies in global innovation and entrepreneurship at the University of Massachusetts’ highly regarded Manning School of Business.
As stated in the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), “The Head of State and Government is confident that the two public officers will contribute enormously towards the realization of our shared aspirations for a fair, just, and equitable nation with shared prosperity for all,” Koskei continued. “This is because of the newly appointed officials’ immense expertise and experience.”
