In response to increasing public criticism, President William Ruto announced on Wednesday that he will not sign the contentious Finance Bill 2024.
This decision comes after a week of nationwide protests, largely led by young Kenyans who believe the severe tax proposals will further strain the already burdened population.
Speaking at the State House, President Ruto declared his decision not to sign the bill into law after considering the overwhelming opposition from the Kenyan public. Supportive members of parliament joined him.
“Having reflected on the ongoing discussions regarding the Finance Bill, and after hearing the clear stance of the Kenyan people against it, I have decided not to proceed with it,” stated President Ruto.
As a result, the Finance Bill 2024 will not be signed by him and will be subsequently withdrawn.
