Shakahola Bodies to Be Dumped at KNH, Kilifi Governor Threatens
If the government does not move swiftly to remove the containers holding the preserved corpses of the Shakahola massacre victims from Kenyatta National Hospital, Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro has threatened to dump them there.
Speaking in Dagamra, Magarini sub-county, on Friday, Mung’aro claimed that the morgue at Malindi Sub-County Hospital, which was housing over 400 remains, was at capacity and was unable to cover the costs of preservation.
He gave Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki until Monday of the next week to supervise the bodies’ removal; if he didn’t, he would have approved their disposal at KNH.
“I have a message for the government, namely for Kithure Kindiki, the interior cabinet secretary. I have two containers at the Malindi Hospital that are filled with 429 Shakahola bodies, but they have only taken a handful of them out,” Manga’ro stated, as reported by Capital News.
“Doctors in the hospital should tow the containers and dump them in Kenyatta National Hospital on Monday if the government will not remove the bodies.”
The county administrator also contended that an offensive stench coming from the bodies was interfering with daily hospital operations and postponing the execution of his administration’s plans at the institution.
“Those who have been going to Malindi Sub-County Hospital have probably noticed that the mobile morgue is emitting an unpleasant stench. “Although I have built lovely hospital wards, the stench originates from the containers used to preserve the Shakahola corpses,” the man stated.
Where the containers are, we intend to build an emergency and outpatient wing. Although we have already put out a tender for Ksh. 150 million, the containers prevent us from moving further with the building.
Just 35 remains have been positively identified thus far out of the 429 dead recovered in the starving cult headed by televangelist Paul Mackenzie of the Good News International Church.
There are still hundreds of families that are waiting to bury their dear ones.
According to government officials, the post-mortem, identification, and exhumation processes were causing delays in the bodies’ transfer.
Courts in Mombasa and Malindi have charged Mackenzie and his co-accused individuals on multiple counts related to the 429 members’ deaths.
