Src’s Final Say on Teachers and Civil Servants’ Retirement Age Dilemma
The Salaries and Remunerations Commission (SRC) has explicitly addressed the proposal to lower the retirement age to 55 for both teachers and civil servants. According to constitutional guidelines, the current mandatory retirement age for public servants and teachers is set at 60, with those differently abled retiring at 65.
Despite this, a recent legislative proposal has been submitted to Parliament aiming to decrease the statutory retirement age to 55 for all workers. Proponents of the proposal argue that reducing the retirement age will create more job opportunities for younger individuals and allow for professional growth within the workforce.
However, SRC chairperson Lyn Mengich has voiced a different opinion. Mengich contends that the country’s mandatory retirement age should remain at 60, emphasizing that lowering it could increase the pension liability of taxpayers, leading to more pensioners demanding payments. Speaking on Spice FM, Mengich highlighted the importance of considering global trends when making such decisions.

The proposal stems from the Public Service Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2023, which seeks to lower the retirement age to 55. Mengich noted that some countries have no retirement age, suggesting that retiring workers at 55 could hinder their productivity when they still have much to contribute to the economy.
Furthermore, Mengich argued that removing productive employees relatively young would be impractical, as they possess valuable experience that drives the workforce forward. The government previously raised the retirement age from 55 to 60 in 2009, providing an additional five years for differently abled individuals in the public service. This decision was made in response to the strain on the pension system caused by a large number of retirees.
Given the opposition from the SRC, the body responsible for determining salaries for teachers and public servants, the proposal to revise the retirement age may face significant obstacles.
