The Fate of JSS Intern Teachers on PNP Promises-July 2024
It is emerging that the hope of employment for over 46,000 JSS intern teachers to be permanent and pensionable could be dashed following the anticipated budget cuts.
The cuts are also expected to threaten some key projects in the education sector.
In this financial year, the government allocated Sh18 billion for the employment of intern teachers beginning in July this year.
The above plan however faces uncertainty which is currently leading to further delays in the recruitment of intern teachers.
Teachers Service Commission (TSC), earlier had planned to effect employment of the interns to permanent and pensionable terms starting January 2025.
However, following the various demos, the MPs pushed for their confirmation to happen sooner after a section of the teachers had staged protests in demand of better employment terms for them.
Serious effects of slashing the budget and subsequent delays in the employment of these intern teachers are likely to see thousands of the teachers get back on the streets to demand for permanent employment as promised.
This situation comes even as schools over the ongoing anti-government demonstrations in various parts of the country continue for the second week now.
The ongoing protests have witnessed several schools which were scheduled to report back to school on Monday and Tuesday being pushed forward.
This is after the midterm break dates were postponed to Wednesday.

Most boarding schools released students early following last week’s heightened activities surrounding protests against the Finance Bill 2024.
Thereafter, schools across. the major towns where demos have been staged on Tuesdays and Thursdays have been asking students to remain at home.
This situation is likely to affect teaching and learning in many schools since this term is becoming shorter each time as witnessed in the past.
As a result, the government is expected to put up some mechanism to facilitate the employment of tS teachers.
