TSC On Confirmation Of 26,000 JSS Intern Teachers
In the next financial year beginning June 2024, it is planned by the government that 26,000 JSS intern teachers will be transitioned to permanent and pensionable status.
It was disclosed by Parliamentary Education Committee chairman Julius Meli that the intern JSS teachers, currently under contract, will be absorbed by TSC, as funds have been allocated by Parliament.
An appeal was made by Meli to the Junior Secondary School teachers to discontinue their weekly demonstrations and instead return to the classroom to teach, as their concerns are being addressed.
“It has been allocated by Parliament to TSC with a kitty to hire 26,000 JSS interns on a permanent basis, with the remainder to be absorbed in subsequent years, hence patience is needed from them,” stated Meli.
It was revealed by the legislator that the explanation from the National Treasury regarding why they were unable to absorb the entire JSS intern group due to financial constraints was accepted by his committee.
Meli spoke at ACK DL St Marks Preparatory School during an inter-denominational service and choir competition in Nandi East, which was presided over by Bishop Emeritus Jackson Kosgei, who is also a nominated senator.
Meli further added that a new group of 20,000 JSS intern tutors will be hired on a one-year contract as soon as the 26,000 are employed, to help alleviate the significant teacher deficit currently experienced in Kenyan schools.
“It will also be hired by the government through the Public Service Commission in the coming financial year for 2,000 TVET trainers,” Meli mentioned.
“The country is currently facing a shortfall of 116,000 teachers, and the government is committed to ensuring that pressure on parents is eased through contracting as they await absorption,” stated the MP.
The MP mentioned that the Kenya Kwanza administration is expending Sh 1.1 trillion in revenues to service debts incurred by the previous administration.
