TSC’s New Qualifications for P1 Teachers in Kenya to Teach JSS
Since the adoption of the CBC, the TSC has persistently assigned P1 teachers to Junior Secondary Schools nationwide. However, there exist specific prerequisites for P1 teachers to qualify for deployment by the Teacher Service Commission (TSC) in JSS classrooms. But do you truly understand the TSC’s criteria for a P1 teacher in Kenya to instruct at the JSS level?
Introduced in 2017 as a replacement for the 8-4-4 system, the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) incorporates Junior Secondary as a vital tier within Middle School Education, admitting learners transitioning from grade 6 to 7. The TSC is entrusted with the crucial task of deploying educators to guide students at this level.
What exactly are the qualifications for teaching in junior secondary schools? The qualifications hinge on whether the applicant is a graduate teacher or holds a diploma. Graduate teachers can teach JSS if they fulfil the following prerequisites:
- Must be registered as a teacher with TSC.
- Attainment of a mean grade of C+ (plus) in KCSE with the same score in each of the two teaching subjects, as per the 8-4-4 or CBC.
- Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree in Education (Secondary option) with two teaching subjects.
- Alternatively, a Bachelor of Science or Arts Degree plus a Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) with two teaching subjects also qualifies.
- Completion of CBC training is mandatory for teaching at the junior secondary level.
The TSC has relaxed requirements due to a shortage of teachers for junior secondary. Those who completed bridging courses before pursuing a degree with a KCSE mean grade of C (plain) are now eligible to teach junior secondary.
For P1 teachers, the bar for teaching in JSS is set slightly differently. To qualify, P1 teachers must meet the following criteria:
- Possession of a P1 certificate.
- Attainment of a mean grade of C+ in KCSE with the same score in two teaching subjects under the 8-4-4 or CBC.
- Holding a Diploma or higher national diploma in Education.
- Additionally, hearing and visually-impaired teachers who enrolled in a diploma in education course with a Mean Grade of C (Plain) and C (Plain) in the two teaching subjects are deemed eligible.
These educators, like their graduate counterparts, must undergo CBC training to effectively instruct junior secondary school students.
