Uhuru lands in South Africa to oversee elections
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta arrived in South Africa to lead the African Union Election Observer Mission (AUEOM) for the upcoming general elections scheduled for May 29, 2024. The invitation extended by the South African government and the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) was approved by Moussa Faki Mahamat, the AU Chair.
The mission’s objectives include engaging in election activities and ensuring transparency and credibility throughout the electoral process. This involves interactions with state authorities, the media, civil society, and international representatives.
Comprising 60 short-term observers from various African countries and organizations, the AUEOM includes diplomats, election officials, civil society representatives, and specialists. Their assessment will be based on legal frameworks, international standards, and principles of democracy and governance.
The AUEOM plans to share its findings with the public through a press conference scheduled for May 31, 2024, in Johannesburg. Subsequently, a comprehensive report will be released within two months of the final election results.
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s appointment to lead the observer mission underscores the AU’s dedication to ensuring free, fair, and credible elections across the African continent.
