Unveiled: How MPs are Paid To Support the Finance Bill-2024
In a passionate speech on Sunday, Juja MP George Koimburi made startling allegations that lawmakers were bribed to endorse the contentious Finance Bill.
Addressing congregants at the AIPCA Ndururumo Church in his district, Koimburi disclosed that MPs were allegedly offered Ksh.2 million for each supportive vote on the bill, which recently passed its second reading.
Koimburi, one of the 114 MPs who opposed the bill, condemned the supposed bribery and affirmed his decision to reject the money and vote against it.
“We were offered money… you saw how they carried money in sacks,” he revealed to the churchgoers, exposing the depth of the alleged corruption. “For every affirmative vote, we were promised Ksh. 2 million.”
The Finance Bill has drawn widespread criticism due to its proposed tax hikes and economic policies, which many argue will further burden the cost of living.
MP George Koimburi’s Stand Against the Finance Bill
Koimburi’s claims have intensified the debate, casting doubt on the integrity of the legislative process.
Emphasizing his commitment to his constituents, Koimburi declared that he could not support a bill he believes will impose financial hardships on ordinary citizens.
“I cannot betray my people for money,” he proclaimed, earning applause from the audience.
The MP also denounced the police brutality witnessed during recent anti-Finance Bill protests in Nairobi. He voiced his concern over the heavy-handed tactics used by law enforcement, which have resulted in injuries and at least two reported deaths.
“The excessive force used by the police against peaceful protesters is unacceptable,” Koimburi stated, calling for accountability and moderation.
Koimburi issued a stark warning about the potential fallout if the Finance Bill is enacted. He cautioned that the economic strain could lead to widespread civil unrest among the youth.
“If this bill passes, the youth may resort to burning the country,” he warned, stressing the urgent need for the government to reconsider its position.
As the Finance Bill continues to spark intense debate, Koimburi’s allegations and warnings have added a new dimension to the controversy, questioning the ethics of the legislative process and the potential social impacts of the proposed economic measures.
