In an official petition to Speaker Mike Johnson, the US House of Foreign Affairs Committee has urged Kenyan President William Ruto to address a joint session of Congress on his upcoming visit to the US. Later this month, Ruto is expected to visit the United States.
Committee Chairman Michael McCaul and Committee Member Gregory Meeks emphasized in their correspondence the importance of Ruto’s speech in advancing Kenya-US relations.
“We humbly want you to formally invite President William Samoei Ruto of the Republic of Kenya to speak before a joint session of Congress during his official visit to the United States,” the letter said.
“This year marks the historic 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the United States and Kenya.” The letter emphasized how complex the relationship is, spanning the political, economic, technological, and cultural domains.
The members underlined the milestone of 60 years of diplomatic connections between the United States and Kenya, highlighting the continuing bond between the two countries.
It was mentioned how important a role both nations play in one another’s economies, with Kenya’s economy growing as one of the continent’s most dynamic and the US being one of its main trading partners.
Ruto would become only the second African Head of State and the first Kenyan Head of State to address a joint session of Congress if the invitation is extended and accepted.
Eighteen years ago, former president of Liberia Ellen Sirleaf Johnson addressed the US Congress in a same manner. If the request is granted, President Ruto is scheduled to speak on or around May 23rd.
