What You Need To Know About Tropical Cyclone Hidaya
The Kenyan government issued a warning on Thursday, stating that a tropical cyclone currently known as “Hidaya” is expected to make landfall in the coastal region in the coming days.
According to a Cabinet dispatch obtained by Daily Brief, the storm may cause strong gusts, big waves, and heavy rains that could interfere with marine activity in the Indian Ocean.
A tropical cyclone, sometimes called a hurricane or typhoon, is a fast-rotating storm that forms over tropical oceans, according to the World Meteorological Organization.
It is reported that on Wednesday, tropical cyclone Hidaya formed over the South Indian Ocean, northeast of Comoros and east of Tanzania.
The Meteo France La Reunion named it “Hidaya,” and between May 2–4, 2024, forecast models traced its west-northwest path.
This comes as Cyclone Hidaya, according to the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA), is expected to make landfall on the nation’s coast between Thursday and Monday.
As stated in the Crisis24 publication, the tropical storm is expected to intensify while it is north of Mafia Island in Tanzania. After that, it will likely “dissipate into a zone of disturbed weather as it passes between Unguja Island and the mainland May 5,” turning to track north-northwestward as it approaches the eastern Tanzania coast late on May 4.
Since then, the TMA has warned inhabitants in coastal areas that are expected to be affected by the storm that there will be severe gusts and heavy rain.
“The TMA stated in a statement that the presence of ‘Hidaya’ close to our nation’s coast is expected to dominate and affect the country’s weather systems, including causing periods of heavy rain and strong winds in some regions of the Mtwara, Lindi, and Pwani (including the Mafia Islands).”
“May 3, 2024, for the southern coastal areas (Lindi and Mtwara), and spreading to other coastal areas from May 4 to 6, 2024, Dar es Salaam, Tanga, Morogoro, Ugunja, and Pemba regions and neighboring areas.”
